The Story
Joinery

It is a trade specialized in making building constructions; the carpenter is the craftsman who carves and assembles the wooden and beam structures of buildings. In Szeklerland, due to the widespreadness of wooden construction, there used to be one or more carpenters in every village.

The traces of high standard carpentry works of earlier centuries are preserved by the joints of old buildings assembled from timber as well as by the solutions of the timber framework holding the roof; the carpenters' high professional skills are also attested by the ingenious joining solutions of carpentered chests and granaries.

The old carpenters processed the raw wood brought from the forest with the help of one-handed hatchets; the construction elements were fixed with joints fitting into each other, shaped by sawing. The iron cramps and the wooden wedges and wooden nails inserted into the drilled holes increased the durability and resistance of the building.

In the past centuries the pursuers of the profession have increasingly specialized in manufacturing a particular product group, thus besides the carpenters specialized in making roof elements, the crafts of joiners, turners and shingle makers etc. have emerged as separate professions.
